The house, which now houses 3 modern rooms, has had several other uses in the past. It was once an annex of the Discalced Carmelites of Ghent, a monastic order, which took in the poor in Bruges. In the 19the century, the brother of Guido Gezelle, a well-known Flemish father-poet, Romain Gezelle, lived here. He opened a "fourwork shop" here and was thus a firework maker. It was a dangerous occupation even then. By order of the city, he had to blow up the city gate at the Katelijne Bridge and in the process things went wrong. He was seriously injured and a leg was severed at St John's Hospital.
Attached to his shop was a flower greenhouse, which was freely accessible.
Even today, this address remains a place of generous hospitality and openness. An ideal base in the city centre to discover not only Bruges' famous beauty spots but also its quieter, unsuspected gems. We will be happy to advise you on that voyage of discovery.
We, Véronique and Jan, love our city, enjoy living there and still discover for ourselves every day what the city has to offer in terms of culture, relaxation and gastronomy.
The house may be located near the Market Square, but it is very quietly located between two streets. Only the front door opens onto Ezelstraat 59. Through the front door you enter a courtyard garden of the B&B, an oasis of calm.
In our home, we like to dwell among the beauty of stylish furniture, beautiful design objects and art here and there.
The house is also well located to explore the area around Bruges by bike or public transport, or even take a trip to the sea, located less than 15km away.
